Department Manager - Head of Lighting - Full Time, Permanent - TSL Lighting - Basingstoke

Overview:

The Department Manager – Lighting is responsible for leading a team in the preparation, servicing, and presentation of a wide range of entertainment lighting equipment. This includes intelligent fixtures, generics, LED lighting, control systems, cabling, and associated accessories. The role involves line management of team members and oversight of all departmental activities to ensure that equipment leaves the warehouse to the highest possible standard. The Department Manager also ensures that safety, maintenance, and quality control procedures are followed at all times.

Key Responsibilities

Team & Staff Management:

  • Provide direct line management to warehouse staff within the lighting department, ensuring performance expectations are met.
  • Manage and evaluate staff workloads, identifying training needs, staffing gaps, overtime requirements, and the need for temporary labour.
  • Maintain and regularly update departmental training matrices.
  • Lead internal on-the-job training and support external training where appropriate.
  • Ensure the work environment is kept clean, safe, and organised at all times.
  • Motivate and support team members in achieving both individual and departmental goals.

Lighting Equipment & Operations Management:

  • Supervise and participate in the preparation, servicing, and cleaning of all lighting equipment, including intelligent fixtures, dimmers, cabling, and control systems.
  • Ensure all lighting equipment is correctly configured, clean, tested, and presented before being dispatched to clients or projects.
  • Oversee the safe and efficient maintenance, fault-finding, and repair of lighting stock, ensuring any issues are logged, tracked, and resolved promptly.
  • Implement and maintain departmental quality control standards and document preparation procedures using company systems.
  • Maintain accurate stock levels for spare parts, consumables, and specialist lighting tools.
  • Perform thorough check-outs of orders to confirm all items are included, tested, and appropriately presented.
  • Handle check-ins of returned lighting equipment, logging any damages or shortages and coordinating any follow-up actions.
  • Take full ownership of departmental stocktakes and ensure equipment records are kept accurate and up to date.
  • Manage the safe and consistent integration of new lighting equipment, including barcoding, asset registration, and branding.
  • Oversee the safe loading and unloading of vehicles. This will involve manual handling of heavy and bulky lighting equipment.

General Responsibilities:

  • Support other departments when necessary, especially during high-volume periods or cross-departmental projects.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding work-related matters and act professionally at all times.
  • Identify and suggest improvements in workflow, efficiency, or safety to the Warehouse Manager.
  • Ensure full compliance with company health & safety policies and safe working practices at all times.
  • Follow all company procedures and adhere to relevant regulations and quality standards.

Company Representation & Team Leadership:

  • Represent TSL professionally in all interactions with staff, freelance crew, suppliers, and clients.
  • Maintain a clean and professional personal appearance.
  • Foster a positive working environment within the team, encouraging open communication and a collaborative approach.
  • A cheerful attitude, approachable personality, and good sense of humour are valuable assets in maintaining team morale.

Skills & Qualities Required:

  • Proven experience in managing or supervising a technical team, ideally within a warehouse or rental environment.
  • Strong knowledge of entertainment lighting equipment and systems, including moving lights, generics, LED fixtures, dimmers, and control hardware.
  • Familiarity with industry standards for rigging and cabling of lighting systems.
  • Ability to diagnose faults and oversee maintenance and repair of lighting equipment.
  • Experience with PAT testing and electrical safety procedures is beneficial.
  • Strong communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
  • Comfortable with flexible working hours and the possibility of overtime during busy periods.
  • Practical skills using hand tools and electronic test equipment.
  • IT literacy, including working knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Awareness of lighting network protocols such as DMX, Art-Net, and sACN.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and equipment handling.
  • Self-motivated and able to take initiative in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to both lead and collaborate effectively.
