The BACK LOUNGE began in June 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, after an open call on Facebook sparked an incredible global response. While the world went on pause, if you worked in ‘live’, alongside the worry of when would doors open again, most of us had little protection, or support. In what has traditionally been a tough business for tough people, it is rare that we talk about our worries and insecurities, but The BACK LOUNGE offers a space for exactly this. A human side that brings together individuals from a wide range of roles, at all levels of their careers, to speak openly and find likeminded people who understood that choosing to work in this industry is so much more than just making a living.
What started as a lifeline during those tough times has grown into a thriving non-profit community, run by a team of committed volunteers who give their time and care for the passion. Five years and 250+ calls later, our weekly online sessions welcome everyone, whether they’re seeking support, sharing stories, or just coming along for some friendly chat. Topics range from navigating industry changes and issues that affect us all, to working to remove barriers around commonplace issues including addiction and recovery, lack of diversity, bullying and bad behaviour, to promoting best practice and a kinder, welcoming environment to work in for all. Some gatherings feature guest speakers, others are simply informal chats where the conversation flows wherever it needs to.
Our community now numbers in the thousands, stretching across the UK, Europe, North America, and further afield reflecting the true global reach of live events. Everyone is welcomed with respect, whether they choose to speak, listen, or just soak up the community. The only ground rule? On our safe space calls (which we don’t record) we keep things confidential, respect each person’s space, and make sure every voice can be heard. Our ethos is we learn from each other, and we support each other when someone is in need.
To come along to our calls, watch out on socials for our weekly posts to register or email info@thebacklounge.org to join the mailing list, or if you want to get in touch for any reason.
