Course Overview: 

The IPAF Harness Awareness, User, and Inspection (HA/HU/HI) Course is designed to equip operators, supervisors, and safety professionals with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for the safe use, inspection, and maintenance of safety harnesses when working at height.

This course is accredited by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and ensures compliance with industry regulations for working safely with Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) and other elevated work environments.

Course content

Harness Awareness (HA) Theory

  • Introduction
  • Hierarchy of Person Fall Protective Equipment (PFPE)
  • Know your Equipment: Harness Systems
  • Anchor Points
  • Boom Platform Hazards: Stay Safe
  • Vertical Platform Hazards: Stay Safe
  • Pre-use Checks
  • Donning and Doffing
  • Cleaning and Storage
  • Summary

 Theory Test

  • Individual, 30 question, open book, written test with explanation of pass requirements
  • A pass result requires a score of at least 80% (24/30)

 

Harness User Practical

This assessment looks at the delegate’s ability to physically apply what they learned in the Harness Awareness theory training. The Harness User practical assessment covers: 

  • Pre-use check of a harness and lanyard
  • Fitting and adjustment of a harness and lanyard for use in a MEWP
  • Attaching to the correct anchor point in a MEWP and adjustment of the lanyard to provide effective restraint

 This will be observed and assessed by the Instructor and marked as correct or incorrect. Harness Inspection

  • Introduction
  • Statutory Inspections
  • Types of Detailed Inspections
  • Longevity and Obsolescence
  • Common Types of Damage and Criteria for Failure
  • Inspection Report

 Practical

  • Harness and Lanyard Inspection
  • Demonstration and group discussion to include associated documentation
  • Detailed Harness and Lanyard Inspection and completion of associated documentation

 Theory Test

  • Individual, 10 question, open book, written test with explanation of pass requirements
  • A pass result requires a score of at least 80% (8/10)

 Practical Assessment

Individual Practical Assessment: Inspection of:

  • 2 harnesses
  • 2 Lanyards or SRLs
  • 2 Connectors
  • Completion of the associated documentation


Qualification: IPAF ePAL

All IPAF cards & certificates applied for will be issued in digital format via the ePAL app.


Operators can download the app for free to Apple iOS and Android devices and use it to view and access their digital PAL Cards, logbooks and IPAF safety guides. The Trainer will talk you through this process at the start of your IPAF course. PD Training will be using the IPAF Digital PAL Card Licence Application (ePAL) to process all IPAF certification.

**Please be aware that we don't print and send certificates, they are digital but they can also be printed from the delegates app if required.

 

Please bring the following with you:

  • Full body harness and lanyard
  • I.D - Passport or Photocard Driving License
  • National Insurance Number
  • Safety Boots or Shoes
  • Hi-Vis Vest

** IMPORTANT : candidates are required to bring a full body harness and lanyard of their own in order to attend this course.  These will not be provided by TSL. There will be no refunds should you forget to do so on the day,  and are therefore unable to participate in the course.
